10.02.2011: Europe 2020 health strategyProgress on the EU health strategy
Under President Barroso's second term, Europe 2020 health strategy was published setting the direction for the EU for the next ten years. The strategy’s guiding objective is to pursue smart, sustainable and inclusive growth in order to exit the financial crisis.
It recognises ageing as one of the great societal challenges. Europe 2020 is implemented via seven so-called flagship initiatives and has identified 5 headline targets to monitor success. There is no Health Flagship initiative as such. However, there is recognition for a major effort to reduce health inequalities as part of delivering the objective of inclusive growth. Health initiatives are dispersed across the different Flagships, which provide more opportunities for health in all policies approach.
The Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing is a pilot project for the implementation of the Europe 2020 Innovation Union flagship initiative.
The main aim is to find, together with Member States, innovative solutions for societal challenges caused by the ageing population. Different funding sources (EU, national, regional, public, private) will be pooled to jointly tackle key issues such as personalised medicine, preventive measures, health technology assessment cooperation, ICT-based solutions for long-term care and chronic diseases management.
